A set of $8,500 Preferred events – one for pacers and one for trotters – went postward Monday evening at Grand River Raceway, and mild upsetters prevailed.
Warrawee Shipshape went to the front and didn’t look back en route to a 1:57.1 triumph in the tilt for trotters.
Scott Young rolled the Rod Boyd trainee through fractions of :28.1, :58 and 1:27.2 before using a :29.4 closing quarter to win by a half-length margin over Scene A Magician. Taking home third prize was the odds-on favourite, Whiskey Tax.
The four-year-old son of Muscle Mass-U Can Cruise is owned by 8113564 Canada Ltd of Sherwood Park, AB. The gelding improved this year’s record to 3-3-3 from 14 starts with the victory while lifting his lifetime earnings to $132,243.
Brocks Fortune was parked past the opening quarter before he cleared to the top, but once he got there he kept on rolling en route to a 1:55.1 triumph for driver Brett MacDonald.
The Taylor Fritz trainee powered through middle fractions of :57.2 and 1:26.3 before using a :28.3 closing quarter to win by three-quarters of a length over even-money favourite This Is My Song. Par Intended rounded out the Trifecta ticket in the Preferred event for horse and gelding pacers.
Fritz shares ownership on the eight-year-old son of Stonebridge Regal-Fannies Fortune with Jared Bako of Dorchester, Ont. Together they’ve watched the veteran assembled 22 wins over the course of his career. It was the third win of the season for the career winner of $347,200.
