Fillies Battle In Nova Scotia Series Stakes
Three-year-old pacing fillies were in the spotlight at Inverness Raceway on Sunday as the half-mile oval hosted two divisions of the Nova Scotia Series Stakes
.
It was a gate-to-wire performance in the opening split for Artistic Putnam, who laid down fractions of :31.3, 1:04 and 1:34.3 before turning on the afterburners over the final quarter of the mile. A :29.4 kicker was more than enough for the Southwind Balsam-Marellen Hanover miss and driver Roddy Hurley to put away the competition by a pair of lengths. P H Princess was second in the $6,750 affair, and Putnams Hope was third.
Trained by Ronald Seymour, Jr., who co-owns the youngster with Fabian Morgan of Glace Bay, NS, the filly has put together a solid 4-2-3 record in her first 15 starts of the 2009 campaign. The six-time winner has earned in excess of $11,000 so far in her career.
Trainer/driver Darren Crowe used off-the-pace tactics to claim top prize in the second division with Semjac Legacy, who powered away to a two-length triumph in a time of 2:03.2. It was the fourth win of the season in 10 tries for the daughter of Western Paradise-Island Zazzle, who defeated Chris N Tel Arrow and JK Neville in the $7,050 event.
Iola Crowe, Murray Wayne Smith and Marlene Tiller of Nova Scotia share ownership on the eight-time winner, who has stashed away $19,178 in career purse earnings.
