Cool Cowboy Claims Century Open
The six-year-old Brandons Cowboy horse Cool Cowboy took competitors around the track in winning the $9,000 Open Pace on Monday, July 2, going wire to wire in 1:52.4.
Cool Cowboy took the lead from Iwontdothatagain heading to the quarter, timed in :28. No challengers engaged Cool Cowboy moving to the half in :57.1 but Sabine Pass initiated a first-over bid moving to the backstretch, drawing within a length of the lead moving to the final turn.
Through three-quarters in 1:25, Cool Cowboy held the top while Sabine Pass stalled to the outside of Iwontdothatagain, who vacated the pocket entering the stretch. Iwontdothatagain pursued the pacesetter heading to the line, finishing three-quarters lengths back while 9/5 favourite Appellate, off a rail trip, closed for third.
Owned by J J J Stables and trainer Jim Marino, Cool Cowboy won his third race in 16 starts this season and his 23rd in 91 overall, earning $310,718. Serge Masse piloted the $7.10 winner.
