Windsun Cheyenne Cruises At 3R
Windsun Cheyenne invaded Hippodrome 3R Sunday (July 1) from Rideau Carleton and not only won the featured race of the day, but also recorded the fastest mile of the season.
The third-race feature began as a three-way battle for control of the lead: Rainbow Palace and driver Francis Picard were on the rail, Appleby Hanover and Pascal Berube were in the centre, and Windsun Cheyenne and driver Stephane Brosseau were three-wide.
They raced that way around the first turn with no one wanting to take back. Berube ultimately ducked in behind Rainbow Palace, but Brosseau had other ideas and sent Windsun Cheyenne to the lead at the opening quarter mile in :27.
As the field went past the half-mile marker in :56.2, driver Pierre Luc Roy came first-over with Ufdragons Rocket, and they began to gain ground on the leaders with Hooter Shooter (Stephane Gendron) trying to get into the hunt second-over.
They went by the three-quarters in 1:25.2 as Windsun Cheyenne and Brosseau were on cruise control and Ufdragons Rocket unable to collar them.
As they came down the stretch, Windsun Cheyenne was the strong horse, stopping the timer in 1:54 for the fastest mile of the season at Hippodrome 3R. Ufdragons Rocket, two lengths back, held for second with Rainbow Palace third.
It was the fifth win this year for Windsun Cheyenne, an eight-year-old gelding by Cams Card Shark, trained and owned by Gina Bragagnolo of Lavatrie. He paid $4.00 to win.
Requested ($3.00) became the winningest horse of the season at H3R, scoring his fourth victory this year with a 1:56 triumph in the seventh-race pace for driver Francis Picard.
All of the eight races on the program were sub-2:00 miles. Stephane Brosseau had a driving double and Francis Richard had a training double.
Live racing resumes Tuesday night when All You Can Dream returns to H3R. Last week ,this amazing three-year-old filly by Sportswriter dazzled everyone with a 1:56 romp by 24 lengths in her pari-mutuel debut for trainer Dr. John Bradbury and driver Stephane Brosseau. She starts from post two in the fourth race.
Post time Tuesday is 6:30 p.m.
