A Blue-Blooded Battle At Mohawk
The fastest mile of the Saturday (June 30) morning session of baby races at Woodbine Mohawk Park featured two impeccably-bred pacing colts hitting the wire just a head apart.
In the eighth qualifier of the morning at Mohawk, Doug McNair had pacing colt Perkins on top heading for home with Macs Power (Sylvain Filion) more than two lengths in arrears. Macs Power tracked down Perkins and those two colts would hit the line almost as a tandem but Perkins prevailed by a charted head in 1:56.4.
Perkins is a son of Sportswriter from the sensational Cabrini Hanover, making him a half-brother to millionaire Solar Sister. He's a homebred, owned by David Willmot of King City and Clay Horner of Toronto, Ont.
No slouch on the pedigree page, Macs Power is a homebred son of Somebeachsomewhere and Michelles Jackpot, making him a half-sibling to two millionaires and three sub-1:50 performers -- the most notable, Canada's 2012 Horse of the Year Michaels Power and millionaire Michelles Power.
Casanovas Jewel boasted the best time on the trot during the Saturday session as well as the largest win margin, hitting the wire more than 11 lengths to the good in a time of 2:00.2. Driver Anthony MacDonald guided the son of Muscle Massive - True Love to victory for trainer-wife Amy and the ownership group of Thestable Casanova Group. Casanovas Jewel was a $5,500 yearling purchase from the Goshen Yearling Sale.
