Spence & 'Weather' Dominate At Truro
Driver Dale Spence and pacer Weather Hanover were a force to be reckoned with at Truro Raceway's on Friday, June 15.
Spence dominated the evening's nine-race program, driving five winners including Weather Hanover, who stormed home seven lengths the best in the weekly top class.
Firing from post two in the $1,675 Winners Over Pace, Weather Hanover quickly pocketed outside leaver Stature Seelster (Kirk Parris), who raced three-wide the first eighth of a mile before settling in behind. Weather Hanover forged ahead through a snappy :27.1 opening quarter and raced on to the half in :56.1 before expanding his leading margin to three lengths through three-quarters in 1:25.3. Weather Hanover poured it on down the stretch, widening to seven lengths to complete the seemingly effortless mile in 1:56.1. Catch Twenty Two (Darren Crowe) and Preceptor (Paul Langille) came on for second and third-place honours ahead of Stature Seelster while Distinctiv Rusty (Ryan Desroche) completed the field.
Returning from a start stateside at Bangor Raceway, Weather Hanover notched his first win from five outings this year. He paid $12.20 as the race's longshot.
Jeff Ellis trains and co-owns the seven-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding, a 31-time career winner and $100,000-plus earner, with Dawn Ellis Abbott.
Spence also scored victories with Elm Grove Maddy ($16.60) for trainer Nicholas White, Ideal Ticket ($4), another seven-length winner, for Chris Covin, and George Rennison trainees Miss Sangria ($2.70) and Always Reese ($32.60).
