Update On Jim Marino
Trot Insider has received an update in regard to the status of driver Jim Marino, who was taken to hospital on Sunday (May 6) after being involved in a racing accident at Century Downs.
The accident took place in Century’s second race. The Marino-driven Sooters Blues fell to the track in the third quarter of the race and did not finish. The Nathan Sobey-driven Northern Titan, who was also involved, was pulled up. Sobey continued to drive the rest of the card.
Trot Insider has learned that Marino suffered a hairline fracture to one of his kneecaps and also required stitches in his mouth.
Marino is in the midst of another fine season in the sulky. The career winner of 2,200 races has reached the winner’s circle 21 times from 147 attempts this year. Marino, whose mounts have raced to $211,000 in purses so far this campaign, currently holds a seasonal driving average of .298.
It is not clear at this point when Marino will be able to return to the race bike, but he did state that he hopes to compete in the Western Regional Driving Championship, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 23 at Century Downs.
The winner of the WRDC will advance to the National Driving Championship, which will take place on Wednesday, September 26 at Grand River Raceway in Elora, Ont.
