'Schofield' Smokes Preferred Foes
The betting public was all over Chestnut Schofield in Thursday’s $11,500 Preferred 2 for trotters at Flamboro Downs, and the gelding passed the test with flying colours for Team Hensley.
Parked past the quarter pole in :28.4, Chestnut Schofield rolled to the lead and proceeded to carve out middle panels of :57.4 and 1:27.2 for driver/co-owner Ed Hensley. The five-year-old son of Muscle Mass-Beyond Limits then sped home in :29 to win by 5-3/4 lengths over Seeyou Men in 1:56.2. Third prize went to a well-beaten Bella Palazzo.
Co-owned and trained by Ashleigh Hensley, Chestnut Schofield improved his 2018 record to 4-1-1 from eight trips to the track. The eight-time winner is closing in on $120,000 in lifetime earnings.
Bred For Greatness recovered from an early miscue and erupted for a 40-1 upset for driver Scott Young in the $8,500 Preferred 3 for trotters.
The Ben Baillargeon pupil made the early break and got away seventh while Nebraska Jack motored to the lead and threw down an opening quarter of :28. Major Muscle attacked the leader in the second quarter, and showed a short lead while racing parked past the mid-way point in :57.
Major Muscle cleared before being confronted and prompted to the three-quarter pole in 1:27 by Fluff Me Up. Major Muscle made a last mistake and that left the door wide open for the backfield. Bred For Greatness, who was still sitting seventh heading into the closing quarter, kicked home in :30.2 to win by a length over Fluff Me Up in 1:58.2. Taking home third prize was Waikiki Hanover.
Tom and Elizabeth Rankin of St. Catherines, Ont. bred and own the nine-time winner who now owns a 6-2-3 record from 12 trips to the track this season. He bumped his cash stash over $75,000 with the win.
Honourable mention on the 10-race card goes to the 11-year-old veteran Little Quick, who rallied for a win versus $8,500 claiming foes giving him the 50th victory of his career.
The son of Quick Comeback, who was driven to victory by J Harris for owner/trainer Jack Harris, extended his winning streak to three-in-a-row while improving this year’s record to 5-1-0 from 15 trips postward. The charismatic campaigner is quickly closing in on $250,000 in career earnings.
