The old last-to-first sweep move came into play for Mohawk Warrior who won as he pleased in Monday’s $11,500 Preferred 2 Handicap for horse and gelding pacers at The Raceway at Western Fair District.
Colin Kelly got away sixth with Mohawk Warrior while Mister X fired to the top and supplied the field with fractions of :28.3, :58.1 and 1:26.2. Kelly tipped his charge three-wide going to the three-quarter pole, and then used a :28.2 closing panel to seal the deal. It was a half-length decision over Mister X in 1:55, with Reel rounding out the top three.
Richard Moreau trains the six-year-old son of Rocknroll Hanover-A And Gs Confusion for owner Brad Grant of Milton, Ont. The win improved his 2018 record to 2-0-1 from 11 attempts, and it went down the 18th lifetime victory for the career winner of $318,651.
AGCO Judges declared the eighth race on Monday’s card a ‘No Contest’ as a result of an accident that took place going to the quarter pole.
Tomitta Bayama, who was sitting in the pocket for driver Garrett Rooney, got rough and then made a sudden break in stride. Master Smile, who was directly behind Tomitta Bayama, appeared to hit the wheel of the breaking horse and as a result Garrett Rooney was tossed from the sulky. Horses in the backfield either came to an abrupt halt or scattered to get around the incident.
Tomitta Bayama galloped around the track before being apprehended. Officials from The Raceway told Trot Insider all horses and drivers came away from the incident unscathed.
