Trotters Take Center Stage At CDP
The Tuesday matinee program at the Charlottetown Driving Park was a card dedicated to trotting stars of the Atlantic Sires Stakes program
, with a quartet of $4,320 divisions for rookies and a trio of $5,340 splits for sophomores.
Scarlet Patti got things rolling with a dominant performance in the first division for the two-year-olds, winning by more than 21 lengths for trainer/driver Darryl MacLean and owner Gordon MacLean of Winsloe, PE. The daughter of PJs Nabby-Scarlet Nite was on top through fractions of :32.2, 1:04.1 and 1:35 before cruising home in :31.2 to seal the deal in a career-best clocking of 2:06.2. Southfield Sam was second best and Hopedale Brandy rounded out the top three. The victory improved the filly’s record to 3-2-0 in five starts, and the lion’s share of the purse boosted her bankroll to $13,170.
It was a maiden-breaking score in the second division for Keiths Daisy, who toured the oval in 2:14.1 for driver Mike Stevenson and owner/breeder/trainer Willis Silliker of Summerside, PE. The daughter of Nikes Image-Debs Birthday sat a pocket trip for the majority of the mile before tipping off the rail and driving away to win by a length over pacesetter Beyond. Third prize went to Bayous Jewel.
A gate-to-wire score was celebrated by B J Eldorado and owner/breeder/trainer/driver Bert Honkoop in the third split. It was the second win in six tries for the son of Meadowagogo-Leap Year Hanover, who stopped the clock in 2:07 to win by a little more than a length over Glencove Umay. Rustico Nicky rounded out the top three.
It was the Meadowagogo-West River Noreen filly, West River Ugo, that came up with a winning effort in the fourth and final division for the freshmen set. It was a maiden-breaking victory for the youngster, who sat a pocket trip for most of the mile before popping out late and notching the nose decision in 2:13.4 over Porter. A C Jocker was third best. Clare MacDonald bred, trains and drove the filly to the winning effort for owner Ralph Annear of Montague, PE.
The three-year-olds were next up on the ATSS docket, and Comere was a much-the-best winner in the opening division for the tandem of driver Walter Cheverie and trainer Blayne White, who co-owns the son of In Power-Coquettish Chip with Kuri White of Wood Islands, PE. The colt laid down fractions of :31, 1:00.3 and 1:32 before scooting home in :30.1 to secure the win in a career-best clocking of 2:02.1. It was more than four lengths back to runner-up Firedance Ridge, and more than six lengths back to Dunmore Laird who was third. It was the second win of the season and the third lifetime score for the career winner of $17,625.
The win streak is now three-in-a-row and counting for Maple Leaf Quix, who turned in a flawless performance to take the second division for the sophomore set. The daughter of Black River-Maple Leaf Legacy rallied from just off the pace en route to stopping the teletimer in a personal best clocking of 2:00.4. Oyster Bed Mary was a quarter-of-a-length back in second, with Grayland Bling rounding out the top three. Mike Stevenson guided the filly to her third win of the season in just five tries for trainer/breeder Ralph Annear, who co-owns the youngster with Steven Sorrie of Sturgeon, PE.
It was a coast-to-coast decision for A C King and trainer/driver Ivan Jamieson in the final division. The gelded son of CR High Sierra-Stormont Bouquet led through panels of :30.4, 1:02 and 1:33.3 before stepping home in :31.3 for the 2:05.1 tally over Dunmore Chip and JK Prince. Jamieson of Wentworth and Ross Roberts of Debert, NS share ownership on the career winner of $9,404, who visited victory lane for the first time in his career.
