Late Night By A Lip
Mister X did all the heavy lifting in Monday’s $8,500 Preferred for horse and gelding pacers, but Mister X popped out late and posted the 11-1 upset over that front-stepping favourite.
Sent off as the even-money choice, Mister X powered to the top from Post 4 and supplied splits of :28, :57.3 and 1:26. Late Night, who left hard from Post 7, dropped into the pocket position and held that spot until late in the mile. A :29.4 closing quarter was just enough for Late Night to earn the nose decision over Mister X in 1:56. Taking home third prize after his first-over journey was Rough Trade.
Alfie Carroll mapped out the winning trip with the Victor Puddy pupil, who is owned by David Carbonaro of Etobicoke, Ont. The six-year-old son of Art Major-Dreamlands Jo Jo improved his 2018 record to 3-1-0 from seven starts with the win. The 14-time winner is closing in on $100,000 in career earnings.
