RCR Features Preferreds; Tessier Triples
Windsun Cheyenne and Pasadena Star each made it into the win column in their second try this year, prevailing in Sunday night's co-featured $8,550 Preferred Handicaps at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Leaving from center-field, Windsun Cheyenne ($13.90) relinquished the lead to last week's victor Ufdragons Rocket at the quarter pole and found himself behind a wall of horses stacked four-wide heading into the homestretch. However, the eight-year-old gelded son of Cams Card Shark shot through inside to score by a half-length in 1:56.1 over the sloppy track. Hoboken Hanover, Vegas Rocks and Canadian Edition crossed the wire just behind.
Driver Stephane Brosseau worked out the winning trip aboard Windsun Cheyenne, who was a runner-up in his season's debut last week, for owner/trainer Gina Bragagnolo. The win was the pacer's 15th lifetime.
Pasadena Star ($4.10), the favourite in the trot division, swept three-wide from fourth at the third-quarter mark and then hauled down leader Iholdon to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:59 flat. Warrawee Proton rounded out the top three finish order.
Owned, trained and driven by Stephane Pouliot, the seven-year-old Kadabra gelding is now two-for-three since arriving at Rideau from Saratoga in late December. The victory was his 26th lifetime and followed up a fourth-place finish in last week's top class.
Earlier on the program, trainer Yves Tessier scored a natural hat trick in combination with three difference drivers. Tessier's winners were Sportsranger ($4.20, Jonathan Lachance), Donna Party ($17.90, Stephane Brosseau) and Torches Angel ($4.20, Louis-Philippe Roy).
The evening's 10th race was declared a 'No Contest' with a full pari-mutuel refund following an incident that occurred near the quarter-pole during which driver Richard Simard was unseated from his mount Artmondia. Simard did return to action for his two remaining drives.
