McClure Maintains Leading Edge
With a driving double courtesy of two sophomore Sportswriter fillies during the Friday night program at Woodbine Racetrack, Bob McClure maintained his slight advantage in the national standings for the 2018 season.
McClure won the opener with the Rod Boyd-trained filly Just Her Luck ($3.80), who broke her maiden in 1:57.2 defeating Dreams On Me by a head.
A back-to-back winner in rein to McClure, Princess Jewels ($5) later won the ninth race and lowered her lifetime mark to 1:54.4 prevailing by three-quarters of a length over Diamonds Dance for trainer Jim Wellwood.
McClure has started the year off with 56 victories while his mounts have earned over $500,000. Louis-Philippe Roy, who also drove a pair of winners at Woodbine, and Robert Shepherd, adding one win at Western Fair, trail just two behind McClure on the national leaderboard.
McClure, who was named Western Fair's 2017 Driver of the Year at the track's awards banquet last weekend, has led all drivers in Canada for wins over the past two years, ending with a total of 507 victories in 2017 and 576 in 2016.
The Elora, Ont. horseman is approaching 2,000 career wins.
