Spud Island Classic Series Begins
Charlottetown Driving Park featured the opening leg of the Spud Island Classic Series for open mares on Sunday, which saw Shooters Bay and Whitesand Whisper put
forth winning efforts in their $2,500 divisions.
Shooters Bay, a newcomer to the Maritimes owned by Adam Johnston of Truro, N.S., won the first heat of the Spud Island Classic, presented by the PEI Potato Board, in 1:57. Darren Crowe engineered the winning trip over a fast closing Princess Julia (Earl Smith) and Unfluffinbelievable (Marc Campbell).
Smith, who enjoyed a driving triple on the day, drove Whitesand Whisper to victory in the second heat of the Spud Island Classic for Hopedale Holdings Ltd. of Charlottetown and trainer Alan MacDonald. The mare held off For The Luv Abunny (Brian MacPhee) for the win in 1:58. Timeless Hanover (Walter Cheverie) was third.
The second leg of the Spud Island Classic Series is set for Sunday, August 16 with the consolation and $4,500 final scheduled for Saturday, August 22.
