Board Lights Up In Flamboro Preferreds
Double-digit dividends highlighted the featured Preferred 3 Paces at Flamboro Downs on Sunday, December 10, with Top Royal upsetting in the $9,000 Filly and Mare Pace, and Strato Boy in the $8,500 Horse and Gelding Pace.
Top Royal, sent at 7-1, was positioned fifth from a second-tier starting spot through a :27.4 quarter and soon circled into third through a slowed half, timed in :58. J. Bradley Harris tipped Top Royal wide in the backstretch, matching strides with race-leader Mach Magic at three-quarters in 1:27.2 before taking the lead into the stretch. Tilikum, sitting second over, lunged towards Top Royal through the stretch, coming a head shy of victory in a 1:57.4 mile. War Filly, carried into contention third over, finished third.
A four-year-old mare by Royal Mattjesty out of the Abercrombie mare Top Of The World, Top Royal, owned by Brydown Farms Inc., won her eighth race in 32 starts this season and her 16th in 71 overall, compiling $140,467 in earnings. Trained by Nick Boyd, she paid $17.80 to win.
Jason Ryan piloted 21-1 shot Strato Boy to a pocket-trip score in the Horse and Gelding Pace, winning in 1:55.4.
Leaving for the top, Strato Boy lost the lead after a :27.1 quarter to Linkjack Hanover circling the far turn first time. Windsong Lord, sitting third, edged wide into the stretch and marched uncovered toward the pacesetter, applying pressure through a :56.3 and 1:25.2 third-quarter. Still battling into the stretch, the two were passed by Strato Boy in the open stretch approaching the line, with Strato Boy getting an neck in front of Linkjack Hanover, while Windsong Lord was a neck back in third.
Winning his fourth race in 39 starts this season and his 10th in 93 overall, Strato Boy, a five-year-old gelding by Allies Western out of the Pro Bono Best mare Hamptonsunsashable, competes for owner Tonya Bakus and is conditioned by Mike Stoikopoulos. He paid $44.40 to win.
