Favoured ‘Ricardo’ Proves Tough
After having been sent postward as the even-money choice, Southwind Ricardo ($4.40) showed that he was the class of the $1,200 Winners Over Pace (Race 7) at Northside Downs on Sunday (November 12), as he parlayed an overland trip into pay dirt for his connections.
Southwind Ricardo, a four-year-old gelded son of Dragon Again, started from Post 3 and raced first-up through the fractions (:28.4, :58.3, 1:28.2) before getting up for a three-quarters-of-one-length win in 1:59.2.
Post 8 starter Burn Em Up Burr (driven by Gerard Kennedy), who also closed well, finished second. The pacesetter, Prada Spur (Joseph Poirier), held on to finish a close third.
Southwind Ricardo has now won six of 13 starts since being acquired by trainer Ron Seymour Jr. (of Glace Bay, NS) and Joel LeBlanc (Victoria Mines, NS) in mid-August.
