Favourites Coast In Ottawa Features
Odds-on favourites Unabating ($3.90) and Stonebridge Beach ($3.40) made easy work of their rivals en route to open-length victories in Sunday evening’s (October 22) co-featured events at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
In the $8,400 Winners-Over trotting event, carded as race seven, outermost starter Unabating pushed clear of two other leavers midway on the first turn, and was unchallenged from there in an under-wraps 1:57.3 victory. Trainer-driver Guy Gagnon put the nine-year-old Broadway Hall gelding in play from the extreme outside, and they were uncontested after outsprinting Jetcrest (Brett MacDonald) and Ghirardelli Lindy (Richard Simard) through a :28 first quarter. After rating a :59.4 middle half, Unabating gained easy separation on the far turn and was geared down to prevail by an uncontested 2-3/4 lengths. Ghirardelli Lindy reached second in mid-stretch as pocket rival Jetcrest failed to maintain position in the straight, and Collector Classic (Jacques Beaudoin) emerged from traffic to take third.
Catheline Pelletier owns Unabating, whose 42nd career win was his fourth top-level triumph in six starts between Rideau and Hippodrome 3R.
Trainer-driver Stephane Pouliot used similar tactics to capture the $8,550 Winners-Over for pacers (race 10) with Stonebridge Beach. After leaving most strongly among the field of nine, the four-year-old Mach Three entire yielded to Wildcat Cam (MacDonald) before retaking with a circuit to go. Stonebridge Beach posted solid fractions of :56.1 and 1:24.2 before opening up on the far turn. With Wildcat Cam in his wake, Stonebridge Beach was kept to task to evade a late rally from the first-over Print Media (Stephane Lareau) by two lengths in 1:53.1. State News (Matt Harvey) circled from astern to finish third.
For Stonebridge Beach, owned by 9096 9205 Québec, Inc. and Meadowgem Farm, Inc., his tenth career win was his second in four starts this month, all against top-calibre competition in the nation’s capital.
