T Barrr Upsets; $50 Million For Henry
A single division of two-year-old trotting colts and geldings sparred for all the marbles - $125,000 in total – in Tuesday’s OSS Gold Series action Tuesday evening at Mohawk Racetrack.
When the dust settled it was T Barrr who emerged victorious in a maiden-breaking upset to the tune of 23-1 for the tandem of driver Mike Saftic and trainer Gregg McNair.
Winless in his first four tries, the son of Adam T-Lewies Lulu popped off the gate to make the lead, and he had nine foes behind him at the quarter pole in :29.1. Cousin Rickard was parked into the first turn, but he marched the front in the backstretch and scooted to the half in :58.4 and then the three-quarter pole in 1:28.2.
Saftic had T Barrr into attack mode around the final turn, and turning into the lane he propelled himself home in :29.2 en route to winning by four lengths over Cousin Rickard (29-1) in 1:58. Taking home third prize was Torches Pirate (69-1).
“He got out of there good and we got covered up,” said Saftic from the winner’s circle. “I didn’t know how much we were going to get home, but it was a perfect trip, I pulled early and he win easy enough.
“He’s definitely going the right direction,” said Saftic. “He’s as good right now as anyone, I think.”
Ian Fleming of Londesborough, Ont. owns the gelding who now boasts a 1-0-1 record from his first five attempts. The $62,500 payday helped boost his bankroll to $75,044.
“We had an odd number so we wanted another gelding or a stud to run through the winter with the weanlings, so Ian bought him and he ran with the other one. Of course, the other one’s no good,” explained McNair ruefully. “He ended up being a nice horse. He was in a few different spots last winter and then we got him as soon as we got home from Florida. I think he’d been right around 2:30 when we got him. Everybody that had him liked him, it seemed like he was going pretty good all winter.”
Earlier in the evening reinsman Trevor Henry was congratulated by WEG's Bill McLinchey for recently surpassing $50 million in career earnings.
Henry, who leads all drivers during the Summer/Fall meet at Mohawk Racetrack, is currently in the midst of his 17th straight season of having at least 200 driving wins. It also marks the 17th straight season that he's managed to bank more than $1 million in purse earnings.
The Arthur, Ont. horseman is also a member of the 6,000-win club.
