Copley Crew Dominates At Rideau
Skyway Boomer pounced from the pocket to defeat his Jamie Copley stablemate Wildcat Cam in this week's $6,650 Winners Over Handicap Pace featured at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday night (September 3).
Leaving from the inside post, Wildcat Cam and and driver Guy Gagnon led the field through fractions of :27.2, :57.3 and 1:26.4 with Skyway Boomer and Brett MacDonald securing the pocket after a post six start. Down the stretch, Skyway Boomer shot through the passing lane to prevail by half a length in 1:55.3 over a track upgraded to 'good.' Last week's winner Bestofbest Hanover, the 3-2 race favourite, closed from last to take third prize.
The winner is owned by the Copley Stables of Kenmore, Ont., Jody Sanderson of Doha, Qatar, and Dean Larkin of Edwards, Ont.
Returning to Ottawa following a trip to Charlottetown, P.E.I. for Old Home Week, Skyway Boomer landed back in the Rideau winner's circle for the fifth time this year. The five-year-old gelded son of Sportswriter out of Buckle Bunni notched his 19th career win and went over the $100,000 mark in earnings.
Skyway Boomer was the 5-2 third choice on the toteboard and paid $7.20 to win.
The victory in the ninth race feature was the fourth win on the 12-race card for trainer Jamie Copley, who also won back-to-back races with Lyons Meandragon ($3.20), Alacrity ($2.70) and Rain Gauge ($4.70) -- the former two driven by Gagnon and the latter by Jacques Beaudoin. Copley took the lead in the local trainer standings, pulling ahead of Gagnon's stable.
Gagnon closed out the card driving Evergreen Artist to a 1:58.3 victory in wire-to-wire fashion from post eight, giving Keven Bernard his first training win from just three starts.
