Sires Stakes Faves Sharp At ‘The Spa’
Two-year-old trotting fillies were featured on Saturday night (September 2) at Saratoga Casino Hotel. There were three divisions of the New York Sire Stakes for juvenile fillies, and the favorites thrived.
Linda Toscano’s Lima Novelty, by Chapter Seven, moved her career record to four-for-four courtesy of an impressive score in 1:57.3. Frank Coppola Jr. piloted Lima Novelty, the 2-5 betting favourite, who didn’t experience an anxious moment on Saturday. Her win was just one fifth of a second off the track record for two-year-old fillies.
The Erv Miller-trained Supergirl Riley, by Muscle Mass, was the 1-5 favourite favourite in her division on Saturday, which was her Saratoga debut. She cruised to a decisive win with Marcus Miller in the sulky. The victory, which was the third of her career (which came in her sixth career start), was clocked in 1:58.
Ake Svanstedt’s Fury Road, by Muscle Mass, was the third favourite to capture NYSS races on Saturday. The filly went wire-to-wire for driver Andrew McCarthy. The 4-5 favourite held off the late charge of longshot Cherry Peep (driven by Dan Daley) to prevail in 1:58.4.
The fastest freshman filly of the night did race in the NYSS, but she performed in the Excelsior Series ‘A’ class. The Chris Oakes-trained A Thing Goin On, by Chapter Seven, went coast to coast in a career best 1:57.2 for driver Wally Hennessey to match the track record for two-year-old trotting fillies which was held by Goosebump Hanover, who set the mark in 2015 with Jim Morrill Jr. in the sulky.
Live racing at Saratoga will resume on Thursday afternoon. The matinee card will begin at 12:15 p.m.
