‘Cam’ Is ‘Cool’ With Parked Mile
After having raced on the outer tier for the duration of his mile, 13-year-old Camluck gelding Cam Cool ($5.40) still had what it took to get the job done on Sunday (August 13), as he gutted out a neck victory in 1:59.1 during Inverness Raceway’s $1,100 Winners Over Pace.
The Jamie Copley trainee took to the track in Race 8 and made his way to Post 4 in the five-horse tilt.
Sent off as the wagering public’s second choice, Cam Cool found himself on the outside early, as he was four and a half lengths back in fifth at the 30-second quarter pole. Im A Sumbunnie (driven by Kevin Bailey) did the work on the front end all through the mile, as he paced the half in 1:00 and was first down to the three-quarters pole in 1:29.3.
Cam Cool and his pilot, Alex MacQuarrie, were the story of the dash, though, as they refused to throw in the towel at any point of the dash. They were first-up in third at the half and were overland in second (just a neck back) at the third call.
The neck-and-neck battle between Cam Cool and Im A Sumbunnie continued for the final quarter of the mile, as neither was willing to give an inch. The duo maintained the neck margin past the head of the lane and continued to spar all the way to the finish.
When all was said and done, it was Cam Cool that prevailed by a neck. Im A Sumbunnie bottomed out the exactor, while Bonnys Mac (Travis Maclean) converted a pocket ride into a third-place finish.
Cam Cool is owned by Ann Copley and Evan Gillis of Inverness, NS.
