Comments on Canadian Open Sale
With the 2007 Canadian Open Yearling Sale now in the books, Trot Insider today spoke with Sales Manager Heather Reid for her comments regarding the event that took place at Mohawk Racetrack this past Sunday.
"Any yearling with an active pedigree on both the sire and dam side, along with conformation, were well paid for," said Reid.
A large crowd was in attendance at the sale and bidders spent over $1.6 million on 198 yearlings. The average yearling price was $8,279, up slightly from 2006.
Mr Lavec filly Windsong Fashion proved to be the sale topper, as the gavel dropped at $95,000 for the Windsong Acres-bred bay that is out of the Balanced Image mare Diamond Image. The filly was purchased by Jerry VanBoekel of Bright, Ontario.
Later that evening at Mohawk, Windsong Fashion's two-year-old half-brother, Windsong Espoir, followed up on his Canadian Record-equaling performance (1:55.3) in the William Wellwood eliminations by capturing the $533,700 final with another 1:55.3 effort.
"Mohawk is the logical place for the sale, as the bulk of the buyers and consignors are within a 60-mile radius of the track," said Reid. "I just wish we had more top yearlings to sell, as we can get as good a price as anyone."
Camluck - Silver Chloe ridgling Malkin - Hip 25 - was the highest priced pacing yearling at the sale, selling from the Westover Hills consignment for $42,000. John Craig of North York, Ont. signed the sales slip for Malkin, as well as Tri Star Farms' Angus Hall - Curitiba filly Highest Potential for $35,000.
