Campbell Sweeps Inverness Sires Stakes
Atlantic Sires Stakes action was in the spotlight during Inverness Raceway’s Sunday (August 6) program of racing, as a pair of $10,460 ‘A’ divisions for two-year-old pacing fillies was the centre of attention.
The second of the divisions (Race 6) produced the quickest win time, as the Marc Campbell-trained and driven Scarlet Desire ($4.40) got the job done in 2:03.2.
Sent postward as the public’s even-money choice, the daughter of Western Paradise was the fastest off the switch from Post 2. The bay crossed over early, knocked out the splits in :31.1, 1:01.3 and 1:32.4, and came home with a :30.3 final quarter for the wire-to-wire win. Scarlet Desire froze the timer in 2:03.2 and posted a two and a quarter-length margin of victory.
Racing at odds of 15-1, Woodmere Chella (driven by Gilles Barrieau) raced well from Post 8. She raced from the back of the pack before coming three-wide to finish second. Woodmere Saphire (Mark Bradley), who had started in Post 1, was sent away at odds of 23-1 and finished third.
Scarlet Desire, who is owned by Gordon Maclean of Winsloe, PE, has now won three of her four pari-mutuel assignments.
The public’s wagering choice also delivered in the first division (Race 4), as the Joseph Baxter-trained and Marc Campbell-driven Royaltywestho ($4.10) drew away from their rivals to post a four and a half-length victory in 2:04.1.
Campbell and the daughter of Westwardho Hanover started from Post 3 and raced on the outside in fourth past the opening quarter (:33). The duo cleared to the lead in the second quarter of the dash and went on to cut the middle fractions in 1:03.4 and 1:35.3. Royalwestho was ahead by five lengths at the head of the lane and came home with a :28.3 final quarter.
Woodmere Ceilidh (Clare MacDonald), who had started from Post 8, powered past her rivals, but had to settle for second-place money. Post 1 starter Elm Grove Mistress (Earl Smith) finished third.
Royalwestho is now a perfect three-for-three thus far in her pari-mutuel career.
The Dana Getto-trained and Paul Langille-driven Surrealist ($6.30) was sent off as the 2-1 second choice in the $1,100 Winners Over Pace (Race 9). The 11-year-old Modern Art gelding was first to the wire after a Post 6 start and recorded a three-quarters of one-length win over Intended Royalty (Redmond Doucet) in 2:01.2. Cam Cool (Marc Campbell) finished third.
