A six-pack of two-year-old pacing fillies sparred in Thursday’s $14,000 opening leg of the Whenuwishuponastar Series at Mohawk Racetrack, and when the dust settled it was Jan drawing first blood in maiden-breaking fashion.

Jan, a daughter of Rock N Roll Heaven-Armbro Savannah, made multiple moves in the mile en route to nabbing her first lifetime win for trainer Dr. Ian Moore.

Trevor Henry made the early lead with Jan from Post 4, and together they sliced out the opening quarter in :28.1 before being looped in the backstretch by Intrepid Lady and race favourite Lady Grande. Henry was back out and driving with Jan on the way to the half, and after parking past that post in :57.4 she muscled her way to the lead and cruised past the three-quarter pole in 1:26. Jan then kicked home in :27.3 to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Lady Grande in 1:53.3. Third prize was earned by Nurse Pie Q.

Wilma & James MacKenzie of Ennismore, Ont. own the youngster who has hit the ticket in all three of her starts to date. The $35,000 purchase from last year’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale has banked $12,180 to date.
