The Reys Sweep Manitoba Stakes
Manitoba-sired sophomores kicked off their Golden Boy and Silk Lace stakes season on Sunday, July 23 at Holland Fair with the father and son, training and driving duo of Richard and Michel Rey sweeping both first leg divisions.
Three-year-old pacing gelding Quarter To Noon won the season's first $3,036 Golden Boy Stakes leading wire-to-wire on the 'good' track in 2:07.4 over a pair of foes. Cash Or Cheque (Roland Rey) was second ahead of Connors Request (Dean Rey). The Mattarocket-Blaze Me A Path gelding now has two wins in six career starts.
Reys N A Rocket dominated the fillies in the $3,099 Silk Lace split, scoring by 10 lengths in 2:06.3. Ma Horse (Dean Rey) was the runner-up. Shes A Picture (Roland Rey) took third prize with a rough-gaited Als Friend Matty (Marc Fillion) completing the field. The Mattarocket-Allamerican Orchid filly, who also won the Kindergarten Stakes over Quarter To Noon last year as well as a division of last week's Lady Crocus, is owned and bred by Richard and Janet Rey.
Trainer/driver Ryan Grundy won the last three races on the 12-race card including the $2,100 and $2,400 Open events with Fire Dance defeating the distaffers in 2:01.3 and Justabitcrazy romping home a nine-length winner in 1:57.3 in the male division. Grundy owns Justabitcrazy while Fire Dance is owned by Ashlee Sluggett and Trevor Williams, who ended the day with four wins as an owner.
