Im A Sumbunnie Upsets At Northside
In seven starts this year at Northside Downs, Im A Sumbunnie has been a factor each time she draws a post position inside the six hole. Leaving from post two on Saturday afternoon, she was surprisingly dismissed as the longest shot on the board.
Did she made her detractors pay in Saturday afternoon's $1,100 Winners Over pace at Northside? You better believe it.
Trainer-driver-owner Kevin Bailey settled Im A Sumbunnie away in the pocket while public choice Accelerator (Keith Dicks) did all the heavy lifting on the front end. An opening panel of :29.2 was followed by a pressured :59.2 half-mile time. Dreamfair Van Dam (Gerard Kennedy) forced that tempo but couldn't sustain that bid and started to back away down the backstretch. Dicks put the pedal to the metal on Accelerator in an attempt to get some daylight on the field, hitting the third station in 1:28.4. Im A Sumbunnie stayed close and Bailey right-lined his mare from the pocket around the final turn with Chapter (Carey Romeo Jr.) advancing on the outside. A three-wide stretch battle ensued, with Im A Sumbunnie getting up in the final strides for the 1:59.2 score by a quarter of a length. Accelerator fought valiantly to hold second over Chapter.
A six-year-old Western Paradise - Cams Newsmaker mare, Im A Sumbunnie ($18.70) now boasts four wins from seven seasonal starts. The winner's share of the purse lifted her earnings to $12,941.
