Frosh Fillies Impress In PA Stakes
Globallyglamourous survived a flat tire and scored the fastest victory in Monday’s $80,000 Pennsylvania Stallion Series stake at The Meadows.
The event for freshman filly trotters was contested over four divisions, with Zoe Bi, Beauty Cutie and Explosive G taking the other splits.
Tony Hall and Dave Palone each collected three wins on the 13-race card. Palone’s cache pushed his career total to 17,997. He has nine scheduled assignments Tuesday.
Palone, who piloted Globallyglamourous, said the flat tire occurred following incidental contact with another sulky near the five-eighths.
“That blown tire makes her win even more impressive,” he said. “I’ve driven many horses from her family, and they all were honest as can be. She felt the same way. First time over the track, it’s more what they feel like than what they show on paper. You never want to put them in a spot where you rush them or put them in a situation they’re not used to.”
The daughter of Andover Hall-Global Glamour broke her maiden in 1:58 for trainer Peter Foley and owners James McLaughlin and Lynne Foley. Bone A Fide Babe was second, 1-1/2 lengths back, with Nicole Hanover third.
Abetted by breaks from six of her seven competitors, Zoe Bi opened a daylight lead before enduring a bumpy ride home, with Aaron Merriman working hard to keep her trotting. She earned her maiden-breaker in 1:58.2 winning by 4-3/4 lengths over Massive Kate. Island Town recovered from her early miscue for show.
“She’s always rough — I’ve got some work to do on her yet,” said Chris Beaver, who trains the daughter of Donato Hanover-Octavia B and owns with Marion Beachy and Synerco Ventures. “Shoeing, rigging — I haven’t figured it out yet. She has some rough patches. She has a lot of go to her if I can get the kinks ironed out.”
Beauty Cutie, who broke stride in her first two career starts, tallied her initial victory, pulling the pocket early for Hall and out-dueling First Class Act to triumph by a half-length margin in 1:59.3. Outrageous Fortune completed the ticket.
“Every week we’ve been changing her a little more, a little more,” said winning trainer Rich Gillock. “She had an issue with her head, getting comfortable when she’s trotting. Today she looked much better and got the right kind of trip where she wasn’t over-extended.”
Bob Key bred and owns Beauty Cutie, a daughter of Winning Mister-La La Nina.
In the $18,000 Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Pace, Safe From Terror was parked the entire mile but still nipped the leader, Lakeisha Hall, by a nose in 1:50.4 for Hall, trainer Bruce Riegle and owner Winchester Baye Acres. Shesasmokinlady, also parked every step, was a close-up third.
The five-year-old daughter of Western Terror-In A Safe Place extended her career bankroll to $770,707.
Tuesday’s card at The Meadows features the Meadow Gladys, a $167,016 PA Sires Stake for two-year-old filly trotters. First post is 1:05 p.m.
