May Handle Up At Century
Handle on live Standardbred Racing increased 17 per cent in May over last year (May 2016) at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino. In the first two years of operation, Century Downs raced a Friday evening and a Saturday/Sunday afternoon schedule. This year, Fridays have been replaced by Mondays.
"Monday racing began at the start of May and has been well received across North America," noted General Manager, Paul Ryneveld. "Our 4:10 p.m. MDT timeslot has proven to be a market niche, and has allowed us to add to our list of partners wagering into Century Downs. In addition, the Mondays have allowed more partners to pick us up on Saturday, Sunday, or both days, which has subsequently increased handle as well."
Many racing and fan-development events are on the schedule for the 2017 season including the Calgary Racing Festival from August 6-12. The Festival culminates with Century Downs hosting the first leg of the World Driving Championship on August 12. Olympic Gold Medalist and Canadian Icon, Hayley Wickenheiser was recently announced as the keynote speaker at the Festival’s Charity Gala on August 11, benefiting the Alberta Adolcescent Recovery Centre in Calgary.
Later this year, Century Downs will play host to its first Thoroughbred meet as the runners return to Calgary on September 23, racing seven weekends until November 5.
