Grassrooters Post Upsets At Mohawk
Favourites struggled mightily in Monday’s four OSS Grassroots divisions for three-year-old pacing fillies at Mohawk Racetrack.
C Mary and chalked one up for the longshot players thanks to the 7-1 upset she pulled off in her $19,150 division. Chris Christoforou got away sixth with the Tim Myers trainee while Deprived shot to the top and carved out fractions of :27.1, :55.4 and 1:24. C Mary caught cover in the back-half of the mile before being cut loose in the lane. She stormed home in :28 to win by a head over Deprived in 1:53.1. Southwind Geo was third.
J R Stables LLC of Clinton Twp, MI bred and owns the daughter of Mach Three-Sister Karen who improved this year’s record to 3-1-0 from five starts with the win. The lion’s share of the loot bumped her bank account over $20,000.
Gottalovemyshadow broke her maiden two races later when she posted a mini upset at odds of 4-1 in her division for trainer/driver Jack Moiseyev. He got away fourth with the pacing lass before making a snap move to the top in the second quarter of the $19,500 contest. She ripped through middle splits of :56 and 1:25 before smoking home in :28.3 to win by 2-1/4 lengths over Rose Run Samantha in 1:53.3. Kloof Street rallied from far back to finish third.
Joanne Colville, Nancy MacNevin and Emma Christoforou share ownership on the daughter of Shadow Play-Gotta Love Her. The lightly-raced lass won for the first time in four starts. She’s banked $14,130 to date.
“We give her a try last year and she was just immature. I liked her, she showed a lot of speed, she just wasn’t matured enough, so we turned her out and brought her back,” Moiseyev told OSS Publicity of the filly’s tardy arrival to the races. “I’m kind of hoping she turns into a Gold filly in a couple starts, you know.”
Manhattan Play was winless in her first five starts of the season for trainer Nick Comegna, but she broke through with an impressive score in a career-best clocking of 1:52.3 in the third division. Sent off at odds of 14-1, the daughter of Shadow Play-Panhattan got away fourth for driver Mike Saftic, and together they held that position to the half before making a big move to the lead at the three-quarter pole. With fractions of :27.4, :56.3 and 1:24.4 already on the teletimer, Manhattan Play used a :27.4 closing quarter to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Loves Angel. Style Snapshot was third.
Bruno Comegna of Burlington, Ont. owns the two-time winner who bumped her lifetime earnings to $44,266 with the win in the $19,500 affair.
Shewearsthepants never saw the rail in the final division, but that didn’t stop her from posting an 11-1 upset for Team McNair. Leaving from Post 10 for driver Doug McNair, the filly was fifth and parked through the first three-quarters of the contest, but she used a :28-second final frame to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Treasures Pearl in 1:53. P L Kahluaa nabbed the show dough.
