Quigg Memorial At Exhibition Park
A trio of $8,000 Bill Quigg Memorial divisions headed the Victoria Day (May 22) program at Exhibition Park Raceway, with Complete Player ($2.70), Nameisonthehalter ($4.50), and Woodmere Finesse ($8.10) all living up to favoured billing in their respective divisions.
In the first of two Quigg divisions for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings, David Kennedy’s Complete Player protected the early lead and never looked back, setting fractions of :28.4, 1:00.4, and 1:31.3 before using a :29.2 last quarter to parry a head-stretch challenge from pocket foe Carters Caper (Mary Clare MacDonald). Mark Bradley drove the son of Brandons Cowboy to his fifth career triumph for trainer Tom Weatherbie.
The second division saw Nameisonthehalter duel clear of Woodmere Soul (Gilles Barrieau) through a :29.1 first quarter before rating a 1:02.2 middle half and subsequently holding off a first-over threat from Jigtime Jones (R. MacDonald) en route to a 2:01.3 triumph. Mark Haig picked up the winning drive on the Brandons Cowboy gelding—now victorious in 10 of 17 career outings—for owner-trainer Lawrence Snow.
In the lone division for three-year-old fillies, Edward Maher’s Woodmere Finesse circled the field from post 8 and never looked back, turning aside a stern first-over bid from Gold Record (Mary Clare MacDonald) and still having enough to outlast pocket rival Tobins Secret (Todd Trites) by a neck in 2:02. Trainer Bernard McCallum drove the daughter of Articulator to her fifth career victory.
