Thats Extra Upsets; Campbell Triples
A group of six faced the starting gate in Saturday’s $10,000 Fillies & Mares Open at Century Downs, and when the dust settled it was Thats Extra pulling off the 6-1 upset for trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt.
Thats Extra was third and parked at the quarter pole in :28.1, but she muscled her way to the lead and went on to carve out middle panels of :56.3 and 1:24.4. A :30.2 closing quarter earned her the win by a neck over the hard-closing Watch My Luck. Third prize was earned by Remember Terror.
Hoerdt shares ownership on the five-year-old daughter of Allamerican Native-Hidden Cost with Blair and Erna Corbeil of Beaumont, AB. It was the first win of the year for the 17-time winner who upped her lifetime earnings to $157,752 in the process.
Trainer Sanford Campbell celebrated a productive day at the office thanks to a three-win performance on the eight-race card.
He teamed up with driver Brandon Campbell to win Race 1 with Take On Day Boys (1:57.3), Race 6 with Im Gracies Wigwam (1:55.3) and Race 7 with Skade (1:55.1).
The training triple gives Campbell a solid record of 8-for-50 this season. The career winner of 556 races has watched his starters compile earnings in excess of $2.6 million to date.
