Katherine B Prevails In Photo Finish
Katherine B persevered in a three-way photo finish to post a 12-1 upset in the featured $7,500 Fillies & Mares Preferred 3 Pace, which closed out the Wednesday night (April 19) harness racing card at The Raceway at the Western Fair District.
Katherine B and driver Nick Steward caught the pacesetting Eat Me Up (J Harris) and favoured More Than Many (Billy Davis Jr.) on the line for a season's best 1:56.2 victory.
With the inside post advantage, Eat Me Up pocketed Miss Brandi K (Scott Coulter) in the first turn and blazed through a :27.3 opening quarter. While she took a second-quarter breather to the half in :57.3, 9-5 favourite More Than Many was flushed first-up from third with trailing tier starter Katherine B opting for a ground-saving trip and slid up on the back on Miss Brandi K, who eventually tipped out second-over. More Than Many challenged the leader on the way to three-quarters in 1:26 and was relentless through the stretch, but Katherine B ducked inside the duelling mares to make it a three-across finish and won by a nose.
Katherine B returned $26.30 for a $2 Win ticket.
Gord McDonnell trains the eight-year-old daughter of Western Ideal for owner Thomas Knight of South Woodslee, Ont.
Katherine B, who has won two of her last four starts, went over the $200,000 earnings mark with her 28th career victory.
