Winkys Pride Wires Preferred Trotters
Winkys Pride was the leading lady in a field of Preferred 3 trotters on Tuesday night (April 11) at The Raceway at Western Fair District, going wire-to-wire in the feature event to earn her 40th career win.
Driven by Robert Shepherd, the nine-year-old chestnut mare Winkys Pride fired off the gate from post four with second choice Rainbow Gold (Alfie Carroll) also leaving to her outside and charging into the tracking two-hole position. Winkys Pride led the way through fractions of :28.4, :59.4 and 1:29.1 before opening up on top in the final turn en route to a four and a quarter-length victory in 1:59.3.
Sent postward as the 7-2 third wagering choice, Winkys Pride paid $9.20 to win. Another chestnut mare, slight favourite Little Red Chev (Scott Coulter), tried it first-up during the second panel, but made little progress, prompting 8-1 shot Spartan Victory (Ryan Holliday) to fan three-wide off cover at the third quarter mark and rally home for the final podium position behind runner-up Rainbow Gold.
Owned and trained by Robert Hummel, Winkys Pride (Amigo Hall-Winkys Smile) now has two wins in 2017 to go along with six other top-three placings from 11 starts. The lion's share of the $7,500 purse pushed her lifetime bankroll to $293,735.
