P L Hurricane Prevails In Preferred
P L Hurricane pulled off a mild 7-1 upset as the pylon-skimming winner in the $30,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace on Friday (April 7) at Woodbine Racetrack.
Randy Waples worked out a perfect pocket trip aboard the six-year-old Jeremes Jet-Taylorlane Action mare to prevail in the evening's feature event.
P L Hurricane established the early lead from post six before 2-1 second choice Exhilarated (Jonathan Drury) took over heading to the first turn and proceeded to carve out panels of :27, :55.4 and 1:23.3.
Meanwhile, early trailer Waasmula (Trevor Henry), the 3-2 favourite after her Preferred win last week, moved underway and flushed out Request For Parole (Ed Hensley), who advanced first-over down the backstretch and up alongside the leader as the mares turned for home.
However, P L Hurricane shot through along the pylons in front of the grandstand and prevailed in the fight to the finish in a season's-best 1:52.1 by half a length over Request For Parole, with Exhilarated in between. Waasmula finished fourth ahead of her stablemate, Lyons River Pride (James MacDonald).
Owned and trained by Dave Brown, P L Hurricane now has two wins on the year to go along with five other top-three finishes from 12 starts and more than $65,000 in purse earnings. This victory was her 18th lifetime and sent her career bankroll over the $300,000 mark.
P L Hurricane paid $17.10 to win.
The Preferred victory was part of a driving double on the night for Waples, who also teamed up with trotter Damfoolrmillionaire ($10.80) for soon-to-be Hall of Famer Blair Burgess.
