Big Night For The Raceway
The Raceway at the Western Fair District produced its second-highest handle ever on Wednesday night (March 15) with an 11-race card that featured Pinky Tuscadero winning the $7,500 Fillies & Mares Preferred 3 Pace and wrapped up with Evelyn Harms earning her first career training win.
Despite losing the lead briefly on two occasions, Pinky Tuscadero and driver Mike Horner persevered in Wednesday night's featured $7,500 Fillies & Mares Preferred 3 Pace at The Raceway.
With an impressive move off the gate, Miss Brandi K (J Harris) fired across the track from post seven to take command of the field by the first turn, but insider Pinky Tuscadero quickly looped back to the lead before the :28.2 quarter. The 2-1 favourite took a second-quarter breather to the half in :59.2 while Uptown Woman (Dave Wall) began to advance first-over with Alphabet Queen (Travis Henry) following her cover. Uptown Woman gained the upper hand down the backstretch, but Pinky Tuscadero was resurgent on the way to three-quarters in 1:28.1 and then kicked clear down the stretch to score the 1:58.1 victory over the 'good' track by two and three-quarter lengths. Alphabet Queen rallied out wide into the lane and edged out Uptown Woman and Miss Brandi K in a three-across finish for the runner-up role.
Pinky Tuscadero, who was victorious the last time she raced in London's Preferred 3 class on January 11, paid $6.60 to win.
The five-year-old homebred mare by Artistic Fella out of the Camluck mare Cassidy Seelster is owned by trainer Mark Horner and his wife Stephanie of St Marys, Ont. She now boasts 15 career wins and a bankroll of $145,173.
The final trot race on the card was won by Bop Too The Top, who gave Racing Under Saddle rider Evelyn Harms her first career training win in just her third start. Bob McClure drove the seven-year-old Muscle Mass mare to the 2:01.3 neck victory over Winzel (Nick Steward). Sent postward at odds of 6-1, Bop Too The Top paid $15 to win.
Over $710,000 was wagered on Wednesday night's 11-race card at The Raceway, which boasts a record handle of almost $766,000 with five more races on the December 23 program.
