Speed Show For Odds On Amethyst
Wild fractions in the first half of Monday’s fifth race at Woodbine Racetrack helped regally-bred trotter Odds On Amethyst earn a share of a North American season’s record.
Odds On Amethyst powered to a 1:52.2 score in a $30,000 conditioned assignment, and in doing so he matched a mark set earlier this season by Wild And Crazy Guy at the Rexdale, Ont. oval.
Major Athens was the one responsible for the wild, early speed of :25.4 and :55. The first-over Finish Line worked his way to the lead at the three-quarter pole in 1:24.2, but he couldn’t fend off Odds On Amethyst who tracked his cover into the lane. Trainer/driver Pat Hudon pulled the trigger in the stretch and the six-year-old son of Muscle Hill-Mystical Sunshine motored home in :27.3 to win by 3-3/4 lengths over Catch The Dream. Finish Line held on for the show dough.
Hudon co-owns the gelding with William Cripps, Charles Gazzola and Adam Kean. The partners watched their star student win for the second time this season and for the 17th time in his career. The $15,000 payday bumped his bankroll to $276,562.
