No Guarantees Defeats Phone Terror
Four-year-old pacing mare No Guarantees defeated the 2016 B.C. Aged Mare of the Year, Phone Terror, in Friday night's featured $11,000 top distaff class at Fraser Downs.
While Phone Terror earned accolades for her successful 2016 campaign at the annual awards banquet earlier this week, so did some of No Guarantees' connections. On Friday night, No Guarantees had Fraser's top dash-winning driver in the sulky, Paul Davies, and was racing for J J J Stable's Rick Mowles, who was named Owner of the Year.
Phone Terror (Serge Masse) circled the five-horse field on the way to the 1:26.2 third quarter mark, but the Debra McCarthy-trained No Guarantees chased her home off a three-hole trip and got up in the final strides to score the 1:56.1 victory over the sloppy track. She won by a head over Phone Terror in the photo finish, with Jabas Luck (Jim Marino) finishing two lengths behind in third.
A winner of the Four-Year-Old Open Stakes event one month ago, No Guarantees is now two-for-six on the year with earnings of $25,580. She paid $6.90 to win.
Blaine Chappell celebrated his first career training victory on Friday night as his own pacer My Boss ($5.50), driven by John Chappell, won the evening's fifth race for $3,000 claimers by two and three-quarter lengths in 1:57.3. The 20-year-old horseman from Alberta began training in mid-December and has made 11 starts since.
Serge Masse enjoyed a productive night with five driving wins on the 13-race card.
