'Willy' The Winning Machine
There’s been no stopping Free Willy Hanover in recent weeks at Woodbine Racetrack, and it was more of the same during Monday’s 10-race card at the Rexdale, Ont. oval.
Free Willy Hanover came in riding a six-race winning streak, and he had no problem nabbing a seventh straight score for the tandem of driver Jonathan Drury and trainer Carmen Auciello.
Drury got away fourth with the streaking gelding, but he had him in top gear in the second quarter. The four-year-old son of Credit Winner-Free Spirit watched Majestic Presence cut the quarter in :27.1 before drawing alongside that foe at the half in :56.4. Free Willy Hanover muscled his way to the top going into the final turn, and he sprinted out to a two-length lead at the three-quarter marker in 1:25.3. A :29-second closing panel earned Free Willy Hanover the win by 2-3/4 lengths over Major Muscle. Third prize went to race favourite Batoutahill.
Armando Capuccitti, Robert Watson, Mike Bartram and Auciello Stables recently purchased Free Willy Hanover, who is 4-for-4 to start the season after going 4-for-12 last year. The $10,000 payday bumped his seasonal earnings to $36,500 while his lifetime cash stash climbed to $$66,450.
