MacDonalds Sweep Rideau Features
Trainer Ron MacDonald and his 20-year-old son, driver Brett MacDonald, teamed up for back-to-back wins in the $6,950 Winners Over Handicap co-features with pacer Adkins Hanover and trotter What A Rush on Sunday night (February 26) at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
The favourite in the Winners Over Handicap Pace, Adkins Hanover cruised through fractions of :26.4, :55.3 and 1:22.4 en route to an eight-length victory in 1:52.4 over the 'good' track. The Love Bug (Richard Simard) followed in second and Killer Thriller (Guy Gagnon) came on for third.
Adkins Hanover paid $3.20 to win. The eight-year-old Western Ideal-Allamerican Nadia gelding earned his second win in a row for the MacDonald stable and is now four-for-five on the year. He is owned by Perry Burke of Grosse-Ile, Que.
The MacDonalds resumed their winning ways in the following top class event for trotters as What A Rush came on to score in 1:57.1 after the favourite, Raising Richard (Rheo Filion), broke stride at three-quarters making his move to the front. Heres The Magic (Tyler Moore) tracked What A Rush and finished half a length behind in second while Torches Angel (Louis-Philippe Roy) rounded out the top three finish order, 11 lengths behind.
Ron MacDonald owns the six-year-old Federal Flex-Casual Breeze gelding, who has won Rideau's top class twice this year from four starts. What A Rush paid $9.50 to win as the 7-2 third wagering choice in the field.
Brett MacDonald wasn't done there though, as the 2016 Future Star Award runner-up went on to score natural hat-trick with 11-1 shot Glass Shadow inheriting the win after being interfered with in the following race for owner/trainer Marc Andre Cormier.
Trainer Yves Tessier also tripled up on the 12-race card in partnership with Future Star winner Louis-Philippe Roy, fresh off multiple-win nights at Woodbine. Together, there scored victories with Surf Report ($4.40), Boot Scootin Loral ($9.30) and I Wanna Be Geared ($.3.70).
Guy Gagnon also drove three winners on Sunday.
