Artists Pay Tribute To Classy Lane
The fire that claimed 43 horses last January at Classy Lane Training Centre has touched the lives of many, affecting even those outside the harness racing industry without any attachment to horses and more than a year after the tragedy.
A total of 27 artists have collaborated for an exhibition titled 43 Horses: Enduring Spirits. The exhibition includes 43 horse-themed contemporary artworks that include paintings, drawings, mixed media, photography, and sculptures. Artists taking part in the exhibit are a diverse group, ranging from seasoned to developing talent from Ontario and Manitoba.
Welding artist Jake Goertzen of Horndean, Man. will offer a number of pieces. Not a horse owner himself, he speaks glowingly of the equine and its place in society.
"They're a beautiful elegant animal," Goertzen told Pembina Valley Online, noting the role of horses in agriculture, sports and warfare over the course of history.
"A lot of people love horses," said Curator Leanne Baldwin. "I just thought it would be a nice way to recognize and pay tribute to the horse."
The event is free, and runs from February 9-21 at Cre8ery Gallery and Studio at 125 Adelaide Street in Winnipeg. Donations to Southwinds Horse Rescue, a charitable organization located in Oakville, Man., will also be accepted.
