Longtime harness racing participant Ken Ewen of Georgetown, Ont. passed away peacefully on Aug. 22, 2023 at the age of 91.

Ken was a devoted husband to his wife Anna, who preceded him on Jan. 12, 2022. Together they shared 64 years of marriage. He is survived by his daughters, to whom he was always a loving father, Carolyn (Robert) and Susan (Alan), his five grandchildren, Laura, Michelle, Mary, Nicole, and Scot, to whom he was always an inspiration and fellow rule breaker. Ken was able to have the joy of experiencing his four great grandchildren Abigail, Luna, Nash, and Blake. He always had a smile when they visited and did his best to make them laugh.

Ken was successful in many business ventures over the years. His success came from his strong work ethic. On the mink ranch, it was an early to bed, early to rise existence that set the tone for Ken and Anna’s lives on the farm in Norval before they switched to the Standardbred horse breeding and racing business for more early mornings. Whether he was busy raising mink, horses or running the farms, he always made time for his role as a father. Whether his daughters needed help with their homework or advice on a personal matter, he had a hand to offer or a shoulder to cry on. Ken was strong willed and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and a wonderful sense of humour. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Ken was a man of many hobbies over the years. One of his favourites was cards. That stuck with him from his years playing poker with the other teens while he attended Upper Canada College in Toronto, to euchre with the neighbours on the farm and finally to muggins points from his grandchildren in heated cribbage games. Over the years, Ken grew to be an enthusiastic stained glass artist and made many beautiful pieces for his family. He also had an adventurous side that showed itself through his many world travels. Always a generous man, he made sure to bring a piece of culture back to share with his grandchildren. Ken also volunteered by offering his services to seniors who needed a ride.

There will be a visitation at Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Rd. Georgetown, on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023 from 2 - 4 p.m. for close friends and family followed by a private internment.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Ken Ewen.
