Helping Horses Beat The Bugs

The Woodbine Entertainment Group will help kick off Equine Guelph’s 'Beat the Bugs with Biosecurity' by hosting the first workshop, in a series of four, at Mohawk Racetrack on Wednesday, March 7.

The workshop, which will run from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., will focus on the importance of biosecurity, the precautions taken to protect against the spread of lethal or harmful organisms, and diseases in horses.

“There are a lot of different ways that outbreaks or contagious or infectious diseases can occur, but there are a lot of opportunities for us to change our management to try to minimize those risks,” said Equine Guelph Communications and Programs Officer Susan Raymond. “If they alter their management, they can have a really big impact on the future health of their horses.”

In the free, two-hour session, attendees will learn how to identify the risks and how to protect their barn from sporadic disease, outbreaks and infectious diseases.

Biosecurity experts will provide a range of simple techniques for horsepeople to use along with methods that are more involved, allowing those who look after horses to decide what level of change they want to make and what would best fit in their routines.

“We are really trying to reach out to the people that are caring for the horses in all the different areas of the industry and we are really taking a multi-level step in our education program, which is why we are providing face-to-face opportunities in the workshops,” Raymond explained.

If you are unable to attend the Equine Biosecurity Workshop at the Campbellville oval, three other locations and times are available:

  • March 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Western Fair
  • March 24, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Kemptville College
  • March 27, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Georgian Downs

Equine Guelph is also offering a more in depth two-week Equine Biosecurity e-Session from April 16 to 29 for $75 (plus HST) per person.

Space is limited. To register or for more information, contact Susan Raymond at Equine Guelph at [email protected].
