The preferred class monster is gone this week leaving Saturday afternoon’s top event at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park a truly wide-open affair.
The capital oval will play host to 14 dashes starting at 12:30 P.M. as the lone program of the week. The preferred pace headlines the card in the finale with Rose Run Quest not entered in the class, leaving a contentious group vying for the $2,900 purse. Eagle Jolt has rail control in the preferred, fresh off a win one class down for trainer-driver Marc Campbell and owners Wilbur and Marie MacDonald of Stratford. The 12-year-old son of Village Jolt has made six trips to the winner’s circle this season with more than $12,000 in the bank. Hes Marvalous scored an open-length victory in his latest and the front-end pacer has post two this week with Myles Heffernan Sr., at the lines. Burn Out Hanover will leave from post four from the Jeff Holmes stable of Orwell and Kenny Arsenault will pick up the catch drive as regular driver Gilles Barrieau has returned to his home base of Saint John, N.B.
Race analyst Les MacIsaac likes Burn Out Hanover's chances.
“Burn Out Hanover’s current form is excellent with five top-three finishes from his last six tries and while he loses Gilles, we'll take Kenny as a replacement any day of the week,” MacIsaac said. “Top call.”
Completing the field are Screen Test (Corey MacPherson), Creepin (David Dowling), Rockin Indy (Mike McGuigan), Bank Of Dad (Adam Merner) and Midnight Matt (Jason Hughes).
The top mare’s pace of the day is carded as Race 13 with Sophist coming into the class on a two-race win streak for driver David Dowling, trainer Chris MacKay and owner Jordan MacKay of French River. The three-year-old Up Front Charlie filly was a recent purchase by MacKay out of the Harrisburg Mixed Sale in Pennsylvania and used a :28.4 closing rush to capture her latest race after being a six-length winner the start previous. The Time To Win is the morning line choice in the field with Ron Matheson in the bike for trainer Jackie Matheson. The Western Ideal lass scored an eight-length romp last time out for driver Barrieau. Other top entries are Arc Light (Campbell) and West River Ambyr (Steven Shepherd).
