Garrett James Whelan passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer on Oct. 5, 2023, at Sunnybrook Health Center in his 43rd year.

Beloved husband and best friend of Lindsey. Loving father of Connell. Dear son of Dechia and Jim (Angela). Devoted brother of Justin (Erin), Brett (Allison), Abi (Steven) and Marshall (Judy). He will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews Natalie, Liam, North and Ariat. He will be sadly missed by his in-laws, Glenn and Diana, as well as his brother-in-law Steven. Cherished grandson of Ira and Pricilla and the late Basil and Lillian. Garrett will also be missed and remembered by his aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

A former Standardbred driver and trainer, Garrett was adventurous and loved life. He especially enjoyed spending time at home in Bracebridge, Ont. and on the water in Muskoka with Lindsey and their faithful dog, Baron.

Fiercely protective of his loved ones and always willing to lend a hand or a compassionate ear to people he encountered, Garrett was adored and respected by more people than could be counted. He was the type of man who always made such a difference in the lives of those around him and put others first.

Garrett enjoyed visiting Prince Edward Island to spend time with his extended family. His love for gardening was reflected in his ability to nurture and grow beauty from the simplest of spaces. Garrett was a strong and passionate handyman, always at work around his home in Bracebridge or his parent’s farm in Troy. Sports were his escape and his passion. Whether it was cheering for his favourite hockey team or bonding with friends over a game of golf, he always enjoyed the camaraderie.

The family would like to thank Garrett’s medical team, led by Dr. James Perry, and the medical staff at Sunnybrook Health Center for their kind and compassionate care.

In honour of Garrett’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life to be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research through Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Garrett Whelan.
