Scott Glenn Nichol, 73, of Camden, Delaware passed away at his home suddenly on Jan. 11, 2024 after a six-month battle with heart failure.
He was born March 1, 1950 to Arthur and Louise Nichol of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Scott grew up on the family dairy farm where his love for animals and farming began. In 1968, he graduated from Spring-Ford High School. Soon after graduation, Scott began to pursue his interest in harness racing with his cousin Bobby and Uncle Bob Nichol. Through the 1970s, Scott raced horses at Pocono Downs until he accepted a job with Skip Lewis in Florida. Scott continued to race horses his entire life. During this time, Scott also spent 20 years as a financial manager in the used car business.
In 1990, he and his wife moved to Camden, Delaware and started Maple Run Farm. The farm started with one broodmare and a favourite, retired Standardbred. He would go on to raise several Standardbred and Thoroughbred yearlings, including Artzina, Embrace The Grind and Littlebitrocknroll. The farm would also be the foundation of his wife’s veterinary practice, Delmarva Equine Clinic, which he proudly helped her develop.
Shortly after moving to Kent County, he became Mayor of the town of Camden. He held this office with great pride and esteem, and would continue a passionate political stance as a Republican. For those who knew Scott, they will remember him for his bold personality that loved to tease, laugh and have fun. Friends could always recognize him with a ball cap on his head and a diet Pepsi in his hand.
He enjoyed travelling with his family and friends. Any travel had to involve a golf course and, preferably, a one to two-day layover in Las Vegas.
Scott loved that his wife and daughter both graduated from the University of Georgia. He strongly supported and advocated for those he loved in any of their chosen endeavours.
Scott is survived by his loving wife Dr. Janice Sosnowski-Nichol, daughter Leigh Raymer (Tyler) and grandson Rory. He is preceded in death by his brother Bruce and parents Arthur and Louise Nichol.
A celebration of life will be Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024 at 2 p.m. at the Pippin Funeral Home, located at 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, DE, where the family will receive friends beginning at noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association or First State Animal Center & SPCA.
