Horsemen from The Meadows Racetrack & Casino, led by track announcer Roger Huston and Meadows Standardbred Owners Association Executive Director Kim Hankin, are the latest harness racing group to accept the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
On Friday night, The Meadows horsemen extended the challenge to the Pennsylvania Harness Horsemen's Association and the staff at the United States Trotting Association.
Driven by social media, the Ice Bucket Challenge began to raise awareness and donations for ALS research. The ALS Association reported on Friday that Ice Bucket donations have reached $53.3 million.
Donations were collected from not only those that participated in the challenge, but also from horsepeople that were unable to attend.
In all, $3,000 was raised.
“The ice bucket challenge really brought together our group for a fun event,” said MSOA President Rich Gillock. “We are pleased to be able to support this very worthy cause and we thank our horsemen and women for their generosity.”
