Kawartha Downs, in association with the Township of Cavan Monaghan, celebrated the Peterborough oval’s 50-year history during its race card Saturday night (July 23).
Fans were encouraged to wear their best derby hat for the evening’s racing, while the dining room also hosted a semi-formal event. Patrons also enjoyed live music, barbecue and prize giveaways after each race on the 11-race card.
Pacers and trotters sparred in their respective divisions of the $5,500 top-class events on the evening’s program. In the trot, Hessohot Hanover grabbed the lead past the quarter and withstood first-over pressure from Sonofamillionaire to score a three-quarter-length victory as the 1-9 favourite in 1:58.4. Sports Report soared from last in the pacing featured, vaulting down the center of the course after stalking a fast first half to win going away by two lengths in 1:56.3.
