After bad weather had cost each stakes class a day of racing on the last two fair stops, both two- and three-year-olds competing on the Pennsylvania circuit raced at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds in Hughesville, Pa.
The fastest miles on Wednesday’s (July 14) day for freshmen were in 2:07.1 — by a trotting filly and by a pacing colt in the “B” division of the Pennsylvania Fair Sire Stakes. Stepping into the spotlight were the Cantab Hall-Celebrity Sweedie miss Shayna Rosa, now 2-for-3 on the fair circuit for trainer-driver Bill Daugherty Jr. and owner Susan Daugherty, and the Sweet Lou-Wide Open colt Wound Tight for owner-trainer-driver Roger Hammer.
The fastest mile of the meet was turned in on Thursday (July 15) by the winningest two-year-old in North America in 2020, the Betting Line filly Lazy Day Hanover, who was timed in 2:03.4 for the owning partnership of driver Dave Brickell and trainer Mitchell York. In the very next race, that same pair won with 2020 Fair champion Tiamogonedancin, and she won and may have gone as fast or faster, but the timing failed.
Two other 2020 Fair Championship winners, both trained and driven by Todd Schadel, succeeded at Hughesville: the Bar Hopping ridgling Top Me Off (2:05.2) and the Artspeak colt Terry A Hanover (2:04).
Todd’s brother, Tony, who garnered driving honours for the two-day meet with six wins. Five of Tony’s six were trained by his wife, Linda, which tied her atop the conditioners ladder with Bob Rougeaux III and Mitchell York.
Next on the fair circuit is a trip to Bedford, Pa., with the draw on Tuesday (July 20) for Thursday (July 22) and Friday (July 23) racing at 3 p.m.
