In a release today, Woodbine Entertainment Group has reaffirmed its complete support for the rule change proposal in Ontario tabled by the Standardbred Working Group concerning the Use of the Whip
.
The health and welfare of the horse has been correctly identified as one of the Ontario Racing Commission's principal mandates, and a rule that would eliminate one-handed whipping of racehorses will send a strong message in this crucial area.
As previously stated to the ORC in a written submission, during its summer meet Mohawk Racetrack receives complaints from customers who are outraged at the sight and sound of horses being whipped one-handed though the stretch by drivers. With strict enforcement of a rule requiring one line in each hand, drivers will quickly adapt and this will serve as one of the initiatives going forward to improve the public perception of harness racing in Ontario.
WEG applauds those individuals and organizations who have spoken out in favour of this proposal. Such a change will show the ORC to be both proactive and an industry leader in the health and welfare of our equine athletes.
