Sylvain Filion returned to la belle province on Sunday and wound up producing an impressive five-win performance over the course of the 12-race program at Hippodrome de Montreal.
The red, white and blue-clad reinsman kicked off the card winning with Quartz Bayama in the lone $15,000 Distinction division for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings. The son of High Profile, who hangs his harness in the barn of trainer Gilbert Hamel, stopped the clock in 2:03.1. He is owned by Les Ecuries JYJ Inc.
Filion capped off a sweep of the Daily Double wager with Saskia Lavictoire, who romped away to win by more than 27 lengths in the lone $15,000 Distinction division for two-year-old trotting fillies. The daughter of Malabar Man halted the teletimer in 2:05.4 for trainer Jean Tourigny. She races for the partnership of Tourmana Inc. and Lapharmaciekedgwick Inc.
Norway No Day gave Filion his third trip to the winner’s circle thanks to her 2:01.3 score in her $20,000 assignment. The six-year-old Self Possessed mare won by just over six lengths for trainer Gilbert Hamel. The popular winner is owned by Ecuries R L Belanger.
Filion returned to victory lane the very next race after converting off a pocket trip with Belle De Rosee in a $20,000 conditioned pace for distaffers. The five-year-old daughter of Goliath Bayama cruised to a 1:59.2 victory for owner Edgar Godin and trainer Robert Dube.
Leader Bayama completed the natural hat trick for Filion with a gate-to-wire score in his $20,000 conditioned assignment. The Robert Dube-trained seven-year-old son of Artsplace drew off to win by more than seven lengths in a time of 1:57.2. He is owned by Edgar Godin.
Filion is less than 100 wins away from becoming the next driver to enter the 6,000-win club. He has banked close to $47.8 million in a driving career that dates back to 1987.
